The Right Honourable
The Secretary of State for the Colonies.
Sir,
I beg to be permitted to forward a copy
of a letter which on 12th February last 1 laid before
the Hon. Colonial Secretary of this Colony. This letter
was considered by H. E, the Governor who was pleased to
grant an increase of £60 p.a. in the Allowance given to
me as Director of the Technical Institute, but ruled
that no change be made in the salary granted to me as
Inspector of English Schools.
2.
While I am deeply grateful for the increase
sanctioned, I beg to point out that the Allowance I
receive as Director of the Technical Institute is not
pensionable, although I have held the post for 14 years, and hope quite apart from any question of salary to
retain it until I retire from the Service; in my original
letter I stated that I should be quite willing to carry
on the duties of Director of the Institute without salary if my salary as Inspector of English Schools could be raised so that it should bear the same ratio to that of
the Head Master of Queen's College as the salary of an Inspector of Schools under the London County Council bears to that of a Head Master under the council. not, as was apparently thought, presume to compare my very modest attainments and knowledge of Education with those of the very distinguished London County Council
I do
